The Reluctant Vegan...

Well, I had my first round of allergies tests today to see what was making my Eosinophilic Esophagitis worse.  Today's tests were for food allergies.  (I am sure you can tell, this does not end well.)  So far, I have confirmed allergies to: sunflower seeds, garlic, buckwheat, milk, eggs, beef, pork, chicken, walnuts, and pecans.  So, you may notice that the recipes that I post do not have these ingredients (much to my teeth gnashing dismay.)  I will be working with some recipes that I love in order to work within my new food parameters.  This is foodie hell.  I am not kidding here.  So, if you DO happen to have any kind words, feel free to leave me a comment.

On the bright side, at least I can hint shamelessly of my need for one of these cool bracelets from Allerbling...

Gift Ideas for a Red-Headed Foodie with Food Allergies

How about at least you are not allergic to chocolate?

Poor thing. I feel for you.

I have a question--keep in mind I'm completely ignorant about allergy testing. Like when they do the beef, chicken, & pork testing how do they know that you are allergic to those meats? And does the test take into consideration all natural meat (like no hormones, free range, organic) or does that even matter?

i didn't even know it was possible to be allergic to meat. there are a lot of good things about adopting a plant-based diet! i know the environment is important to you, and there's basically no other change you can make to your day-to-day life that has more positive impact than eating lower on the food chain. you will dramatically reduce your carbon footprint this way. plus it's added incentive to grow your own food, since fruits and veggies will make up the majority of your diet.

also, i can assure you, i've been vegan for nearly eight years and i've never run out of things to eat. tasty things, no less.

Allergic to garlic! Poor thing!

May I recommend the book The Veganomicon? Loads of tasty vegan dishes.

Thank you everyone! I do appreciate any and all recommendations. I think the garlic issue may be the hardest, since apparently it is in nearly everything that is found in a can or box! I could not find vegetable stock without garlic to save my life. I guess I will be making my own from here on out!

As for the beef, pork, and chicken allergies, apparently the allergy is to the proteins in the meat.

I did make a lovely gluten free/vegan Stonefruit (peach and cherry) Patchwork Pie yesterday. I was going to photograph it and blog the recipe, but was all gone within the hour.

Clearly I need to make another this week!
